Another gift to the banking world from the city of Mangalore is the Vijaya Bank. Started in 1931 by Shri A. B. Shetty the bank’s initial objective was to provide accessible banking services to farmers in the southern districts of Karnataka (Dakshina Kannada).
The period between 1963-1968 saw tremendous consolidation with the bank taking over 9 smaller banks in mergers. On 15th April 1980 the bank became a nationalized bank. From that time it has grown into 1124 branch network. The logo of the banks shows a male character leaning to the left. It reminds equally of the Maharaja of Air India and PG Wodehouse’s Jeeves too! The bank’s footprint today covers all Indian states.
Although being the largest bank in Karnataka the bank is aggressively promoting the usage of Hindi in its business, to the extent of using bi-lingual software applications!
Apart from Vijaya HomeLoan all other retail loans are branded “V”. This includes, V Mortgage loan, V Niwas, V Wheels (Car loan) etc.
