Although the bank was existent during the first nationalisation drive, it was only in 1980 that it became nationalised. It was the second Public bank to come out with an IPO. Its strength was visible considering that the IPO was over- subscribed by 13 times.
The founder of the bank was Haji Abdullah who envisioned “The Primary object in forming ‘Corporation’ is not only to cultivate habits of thrift amongst all classes of people, without distinction of caste or creed, but also habits of co-operation amongst all classes”.
